Once you grow it into a service with real users, you move up to Pro ($25), which bills usage-based charges beyond the base limits. Reassuringly, Pro has a Spend Cap enabled by default, which guards against a surprise blowout bill — when you hit the cap, it simply blocks additional resources rather than letting charges climb without limit.

A Usage Quirk — The Free Plan’s “Auto-Pause” Trap (Read This)

There’s one thing everyone on the free tier absolutely must know. Free-plan projects automatically go into a “pause” state after one week with no access. When paused, the database freezes, reads and writes are blocked, and only when someone hits the site does it wake back up. If you’ve put up a personal site and notice it “sometimes won’t load, then comes back to life once I visit it” — that’s exactly this. It’s not a malfunction; it’s the normal behavior of the free plan.

Here’s the most important misconception to clear up. A pause is not a deletion. Even while paused, your data is kept intact, and once you restore it (visit again), it comes back 100%. There are conditions, though.

  • For up to 90 days after the pause, you can restore with a single click in the dashboard.

That said, if you’re running a live service for free, do remember this article’s “auto-pause” trap — your data won’t be deleted, but 90 days of neglect and the absence of backups are real risks. For learning and prototypes, free is plenty; the moment you start taking on real users is the moment to think about a Pro upgrade (or a wake-up automation).
