  • Aider (Open Source): A Python CLI created by Paul Gauthier and licensed under Apache 2.0. No subscription — you pay only your LLM API bill. Supports 75+ models including Claude 4.x, GPT-5, Gemini, and DeepSeek. Built around a git-first philosophy: every code change is automatically committed. Also supports voice input and image/URL attachments.

2) IDE-Integrated — AI that lives inside your editor

These are editors or editor extensions that deliver AI assistance without interrupting the code-editing flow.

  • Cursor (Anysphere): A VS Code fork. Released Cursor 3.5 in May 2026, adding Cloud Agents that run in isolated cloud VMs. Composer 2.5 (a proprietary model) handles multi-file agentic edits. Plans: Pro ($20/mo), Pro+ ($60/mo), Ultra ($200/mo). Has the largest community of any AI code editor.
